Lana Irons MD - About Me

I am a board-certified Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist specializing in trauma-informed care. My work is grounded in extensive experience supporting and treating individuals who have endured complex and acute trauma. This includes time spent working with clients in the domestic violence shelter systems in Brooklyn and Queens, as well as at the VA, where I treated veterans coping with military-related trauma.

Beyond clinical work, I have provided training for Assistant District Attorneys at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and for medical professionals across New York City hospitals on how to engage effectively and compassionately with trauma survivors. I’m also currently a member of the Domestic Violence/Gender Based Biolence Healthcare Working Group with the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender Based Violence.

My therapeutic approach is rooted in integrating a client’s medical histories, lifestyle factors, and medication management with psychodynamic psychotherapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), somatic techniques, and other evidence-based trauma-specific modalities. For over six years, I have been practicing in Brooklyn, New York, offering individualized care that is affirming, non-stigmatizing, and attuned to the complex interplay between personal experience and broader societal systems.

As a psychiatrist, my goal is to support meaningful change and growth by helping individuals process the patterns and histories that contribute to their disconnection in relationships, communities, and within themselves. I strive to create a space that honors the diversity of human experience and meets each person where they are.

I have particular experience working with LGBTQIA+ individuals, including transgender and non-binary clients. My areas of expertise include PTSD and Complex PTSD, anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance use disorders, and personality disorders. I also specialize in working with individuals with histories of complex trauma during both childhood and adulthood.

Psychiatric Medication Management

Psychiatric medication can be an important part of treatment for managing symptoms of mental health conditions. When appropriate, medications are prescribed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may also include psychotherapy, lifestyle adjustments, and other supports.

The goal of medication is to help stabilize mood, reduce symptoms such as anxiety, depression, or PTSD, and improve daily functioning and overall quality of life.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a type of treatment that can help individuals experiencing a wide array of mental health conditions and emotional challenges. Psychotherapy can help not only alleviate symptoms, but also, certain types of psychotherapies can help identify the psychological root causes of one’s condition so a person can function better and have enhanced emotional well-being and healing (APA, 2025).

I tailor psychotherapy to each client’s unique needs, drawing from several evidence-based approaches. These include psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and supportive psychotherapy techniques. The duration and frequency of therapy depend on each person’s goals and the nature of the concerns they bring to treatment.

Evaluations & Supervision

I provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations for individuals with complex medical and mental health histories. These evaluations can support diagnosis, treatment planning, and clarification in cases involving overlapping or difficult-to-diagnose conditions.

In addition to clinical care, I offer clinical supervision for mental health professionals working with clients who have complex trauma or co-occurring psychiatric conditions. I also accept referrals for second-opinion evaluations from other providers seeking additional insight into challenging or nuanced cases.

Rates

I do not currently accept insurance. However, I can provide a Superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

My fees are based on the length of the session and the type of service provided, such as psychotherapy or medication management. I can discuss rates in more detail during the free initial consultation, and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about reimbursement or payment options.
